And let me tell you, with a little bit of imagination, creativity and skill there are many more things you can do!
We’ve seen beautiful examples of mosaics, coffee tables, bracelets, trays, fridge magnets, candles and more! If you, like us are totally into jewellery then check out these funky bottle cap earrings! There are several tutorials out there on how to make these stylish earrings – most of them fabulously simple.
Here’s our version of how to make your own upcycled bottle cap earrings.
What you need:
Bottle caps (preferably 2 matching)
Drill or hammer and nail
2 Jump rings
2 earring findings
First of all, the most obvious step is of course to collect bottle caps. There are some drinks with really terrific designs so choose ones that appeal to you. All you really need is one matching pair and you’re good to go, although we suggest having a few extras on hand as back-ups to allow room for a little trial and error.
Then you need to make a hole. This can be done a couple of ways, but either way the trickiest part is holding the bottle cap while you drill, or punch, a hole with a nail. A vice would be best, or an extra couple of hands and a decent pair of pliers. – drilling such a small item with an electric drill can be a dangerous though, and requires care and some practice. To make it a little easier, you can take your pliers and lift out the edges of the bottle cap for easy access to make the whole. You can choose to leave like that or to bend the edges down again afterwards. Drill the hole from the outside so that sanding the edges of the hole smooth won’t mar the decoration on the outside of the cap.
Take the sandpaper and smooth any rough edges around the whole you just made and around the edges. You don’t want to be poked by your new beautiful earrings!
Next you need two jump rings and two earring findings which you can get from any craft or bead stall. Use pliers to gently open the jump rings and insert into your bottle cap. Once this is done, you can then insert your earring findings.
You can make your earrings as simple or as decorative as you wish. If you’re an accomplished jewellery maker than you might want to try adding some beads with craft wire. There are many variations on this theme so use your imagination, do a little Googling, start collecting those old bottle caps and get creative!
